A city founded in the turn of the fourth and third century BC. (as Laodicea), lies in north-western Syria, on the Mediterranean Sea in Latakia muhaphase. It counts approx. 550,000 inhabitants.
There is an airport.
Latakia is an important road junction. It is connected by highways to Aleppo and Hims.
